Madredeus means mother of God. The very first concert of the band was in the church of "Madredeus" in Lisbon. After this concert, which was an extraordinary success, they were asked about the name of the band and they said they did not have one yet. After a lot of discussion, the decision was made to call themselves "Madredeus". This is the story behind the name.
